Easy Ube Cold Foam (Starbucks-Inspired)
Let me guess: you saw the purple foam sitting on top of someone’s iced coffee and you want it — but you don’t want to hunt down ube powder or simmer a syrup on a Tuesday. Same.
Here’s the good news: this ube cold foam takes four ingredients and about a minute. No cooking, no specialty powder, no homemade syrup. You froth, you pour, you drink. That’s the whole thing.
It has a creamy vanilla base, a subtle sweet-and-nutty ube flavor, and that unreal purple color — all from one bottle of ube extract you can order online and a frother you probably already own.
The inspiration is Starbucks’ Ube Coconut Cold Foam, which combines vanilla sweet cream with toasted coconut syrup and an ube sweet powder.
This version borrows the same creamy vanilla base and skips the specialty powder for easy-to-find ube extract. You can pour it over just about any iced drink, and it comes together faster than the drive-thru line.

Why You’ll Love This Ube Cold Foam
The goal here was the easiest version that still tastes genuinely good. Not the most authentic, not the most impressive — the one you’ll actually make on a regular morning.
You need four ingredients, there’s no cooking, and start to finish it’s about a minute. The ube extract does double duty (flavor and color), and a little vanilla syrup sweetens it and gives it that coffee-shop finish.
It’s:
- Made with just 4 ingredients
- Ready in about a minute
- Creamy, lightly sweet, and vanilla-forward
- Easy to adjust depending on how strong you like your ube flavor
- Delicious on iced coffee, cold brew, matcha, or even plain iced milk
If you want the full method behind this and every other flavor, I keep it all in one place in my guide to how to make cold foam at home.
What Is Ube?
Ube is a purple yam used all over Filipino desserts and sweets. It has a mild, sweet, earthy flavor that’s often described as nutty with hints of vanilla — and it’s responsible for that vibrant purple color that makes ube drinks instantly recognizable.
For this recipe we’re using ube extract, which is the shortcut that makes the whole thing work. It adds both the flavor and the color without cooking fresh ube or making a separate syrup.
Ingredients
You only need four things to make this ube cold foam.
Heavy cream
Heavy cream gives the foam its rich, velvety texture and lets it whip into something thick but still pourable.
Whole milk
A splash of whole milk thins the cream just enough so you get silky cold foam instead of whipped cream.
Vanilla syrup
Vanilla syrup adds the sweetness and plays right into ube’s naturally vanilla-like flavor. A good store-bought vanilla syrup is completely fine here — use your favorite, or homemade if you have it.
Ube extract
This is the one that does the work: flavor and that signature purple, all from a few drops. Extracts vary a lot in strength between brands, so start with the amount in the recipe before adding more. This is the ube extract I use →
How To Make Ube Cold Foam
Add the heavy cream, whole milk, vanilla syrup, and ube extract to a small glass or a frothing pitcher.
Froth everything together with a handheld milk frother for about 20 to 30 seconds. You’re looking for thick, creamy, and airy — but still pourable.
Once it’s thickened, pour it right over iced coffee, cold brew, iced matcha, or whatever cold drink you’ve got. Serve it immediately, while the foam is at its thickest.
The Secret To the Best Cold Foam Texture
The only thing you really have to watch is how long you froth.
You want thick and velvety but still pourable. If you keep going too long, the heavy cream tips over into whipped cream and sits in a solid mound on top instead of floating.
Ask me how I know — my first batch was basically a scoop of ube whipped cream perched on my cold brew. Still tasted great. Just wasn’t foam.
So stop as soon as the mixture has visibly grown in volume and thickened enough to float over your drink.
A handheld frother is the easiest tool for a single serving, and if you’re deciding on one, I broke down what’s worth buying in my best milk frother for cold foam guide.

Is This a Starbucks Copycat Ube Cold Foam?
It’s Starbucks-inspired, not an exact copycat.
Starbucks’ Ube Coconut Cold Foam uses vanilla sweet cream, toasted coconut syrup, and an ube sweet powder made with ube powder, cane sugar, natural flavor, and fruit and vegetable juices for color.
This version keeps the same basic idea — a creamy vanilla base with ube flavor — but swaps the specialty powder for easy ube extract and leaves out the coconut syrup. That’s what gets you down to four ingredients with no homemade syrups or hard-to-find powders.
Can I Add Coconut Flavor?
Absolutely. For something closer to the Starbucks version, replace some or all of the vanilla syrup with toasted coconut syrup:
- 3 tablespoons heavy cream
- 1 tablespoon whole milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla syrup
- 1 teaspoon coconut syrup
- ¼ teaspoon ube extract
That adds a subtle tropical note without making the recipe any harder. if you just want the easiest everyday version, the four-ingredient vanilla ube foam is where I’d start.
What Does Ube Cold Foam Taste Like?
Mild, sweet, and a little earthy, with nutty and vanilla-like notes.
Paired with the vanilla syrup and rich cream, it lands somewhere dessert-like without needing a long ingredient list.
The exact flavor depends on your ube extract, since some brands are noticeably stronger than others. Start light — you can always add more.
What To Put Ube Cold Foam On
This one is especially good over:
- Iced coffee
- Cold brew
- Iced matcha (it’s lovely on a banana bread matcha latte)
- An iced vanilla latte
- An iced ube latte
- Espresso over milk and ice
- Plain iced milk, for a caffeine-free option
The easiest combination is cold brew over ice with a generous layer of ube cold foam on top. The sweet, creamy foam slowly mixes into the coffee as you drink it, and honestly that’s the whole reason to make it.
If you’re building a cold foam habit, a couple more to keep in rotation: strawberry cold foam and cherry cold foam lemonade.
Tips For the Best Ube Cold Foam
- Start with ¼ teaspoon of ube extract. Brands vary, and some are much more concentrated than others. Add more after frothing if you want it deeper.
- Don’t over-froth. Stop when it’s thick and airy but still easy to pour, or you’ll end up with whipped cream.
- Adjust the sweetness. Two teaspoons of vanilla syrup makes a noticeably sweet, coffee-shop-style foam. Drop it to 1 teaspoon for something lighter.
- For coconut ube cold foam, swap 1 teaspoon of the vanilla syrup for 1 teaspoon of toasted coconut syrup.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you make ube cold foam?
Add heavy cream, whole milk, vanilla syrup, and ube extract to a small glass or frothing pitcher, then froth with a handheld milk frother for 20 to 30 seconds until thick and airy but still pourable. Pour it over your iced drink and serve right away.
What is ube cold foam?
Ube cold foam is a sweet, purple, creamy topping made by frothing heavy cream, a little milk, sweetener, and ube extract until thick. It’s poured over iced coffee, cold brew, or matcha, and it slowly melts into the drink as you sip.
Does ube extract make the cold foam purple?
Yes. Ube extract usually adds both the ube flavor and a vibrant purple color, so you don’t need separate food coloring. The exact shade depends on your extract — some are very concentrated, so start with ¼ teaspoon and add a drop or two more after frothing if you want it deeper.
Can I make ube cold foam without a frother?
Yes. A handheld frother is fastest, but you can also add the ingredients to a tightly sealed jar and shake vigorously until thick and foamy. For a single serving, a small handheld frother gives the most consistent texture with the least effort.
Can you make ube cold foam ahead of time?
Cold foam is best right after frothing, when it’s at its thickest. You can stir the unfrothed ingredients together and keep them covered in the fridge, then froth just before serving. I wouldn’t froth the actual foam far in advance.
