Why I Became a Health Coach (And How I Actually Use It Today)
When people ask me why I became a health coach, I tell them my answer probably isn’t what they’d expect.
I enrolled in the Institute for Integrative Nutrition in 2020, I wasn’t planning to become a traditional health coach. I didn’t have visions of building a six-figure coaching practice or creating meal plans for celebrities.
I had something much more practical in mind.
At 35, I used the unexpected downtime COVID provided to pursue something I’d been considering for years: deepening my understanding of health and wellness.
Here’s the truth about why I got my health coach certification – and more importantly, how I actually use it today.

My Health Journey: Why This Mattered to Me
At 24, I had a health scare that completely changed how I thought about my body and wellness.
Over the next decade, I spent my thirties making intentional lifestyle changes that dramatically improved my health – but I didn’t fully understand the “why” behind what was working.
By 35, I wanted deeper knowledge. Not just surface-level wellness tips, but actual understanding of how nutrition, lifestyle, and holistic health practices work together, and credentials to back it up.
My job as a Director Operations at the time was leaving me at a desk in a seat more than I knew was good for me. So at the time, I was already seriously considering something radically different than my 9-5 – the medical field. I’d even taken a few prerequisites for a nurse practitioner program.
But approaching 40 and learning more about the medical and nursing fields left me with the reality that neither were really the right path for me.
Health coaching offered something different: comprehensive wellness education I could complete while maintaining my career and parenting responsibilities.
10 Reasons Why I Got My IIN Health Coach Certification
1. To Understand My Own Health at a Deeper Level
At minimum, I wanted to be educated about my own body and health. After spending a decade making changes that worked (but not always understanding why), I wanted the knowledge to make truly informed decisions about my wellness.
This alone justified the investment for me. Even if I never coached a single client, understanding nutrition, holistic health practices, and how lifestyle factors impact wellness was worth it.
2. To Have Credentials People Actually Respect
Let’s be honest: everyone has opinions about health and wellness. What I wanted was legitimate education and recognized credentials that would be taken seriously.
IIN’s reputation and comprehensive curriculum gave me that credibility – whether I was talking to my child’s pediatrician, making decisions for my family, or eventually working with wellness professionals in my business.
3. To Create Options for My Career Future
I wasn’t sure exactly how I’d use the certification, but I knew I wanted options beyond my corporate role. At best, it would grow into a side career. At minimum, it would be knowledge I could leverage somehow.
That vagueness was okay with me. I didn’t need a perfect plan – I needed to start building something that aligned with my interests outside of event marketing.
4. To Do Something More Fulfilling Than Corporate Politics
After 20 years in corporate environments, I was burned out on office politics and feeling undervalued despite performing high-level work. I craved something more meaningful.
Helping people transform their lives through better health felt infinitely more fulfilling than planning another corporate event or navigating another reorganization.
5. To Use the Unexpected Gift of COVID Downtime Wisely
When the pandemic hit and everything slowed down, I had a choice: binge Netflix or invest in something meaningful.
IIN’s online format was perfect for learning from home while managing work uncertainty and parenting a young child. The timing aligned in a way it might not have otherwise.
6. To Bring My Business Brain to the Wellness Industry
I had two decades of business operations, project management, systems thinking, and strategic planning experience. I was curious about how those skills might apply to wellness.
Turns out, the wellness industry desperately needs people with strong business foundations – but I didn’t know that yet when I enrolled.
7. To Make Better Decisions for My Future Child
It had been a dream of mine to start a family so knowing that by taking care of my health, I’d have the best change at conceiving later in life. Plus, I wanted to make informed decisions about my child’s nutrition, health habits, and wellness foundation. Not just follow trending advice or pediatrician generics, but actually understand what supports optimal health for growing bodies.
The certification gave me confidence to trust my instincts and knowledge when making family health decisions.
Which worked by the way! I had my first child at 38. Read more about how I conceived on my first try here.
8. To Connect with Like-Minded People
Working in corporate event marketing, I wasn’t surrounded by people passionate about health and wellness. I wanted to connect with others who prioritized these topics and understood why they mattered.
The IIN community delivered on this completely – I met people from diverse backgrounds all committed to understanding holistic health – many of whom lived right in my very own city.
9. To Have a Legitimate Reason to Keep Learning About Health
I’m someone who loves learning and understanding systems. Health coaching gave me a framework and reason to continue deepening my wellness knowledge without it just being a “hobby.”
The certification created structure for ongoing education that I might have otherwise approached haphazardly.
10. To Create Something That Was Mine
After building my career in corporate environments where I was building other people’s visions, I wanted something that belonged to me. Knowledge, credentials, and potential career paths that I owned completely.
Whether I used the certification traditionally or not, it would be mine to leverage however I chose.
How I Actually Use My Health Coach Certification Today
Here’s where my path diverged from traditional health coaching:
Instead of building a practice working one-on-one with clients on their wellness goals, I discovered I’m most passionate about helping health coaches and wellness professionals build their businesses.
What that looks like:
- Building WordPress websites for health coaches and wellness professionals
- Understanding exactly what wellness practitioners need because I have the same education
- Creating content strategy and service offerings that actually convert
- Bringing my 20 years of business operations expertise to an industry that often lacks it
My certification gives me credibility and deep understanding of what health coaches need – but my business background is what lets me actually help them succeed.
I also use it for:
- Making informed health decisions for myself and my family
- Creating content for Reach Wellth with actual authority
- Understanding the wellness industry landscape
- Connecting with wellness professionals authentically
- Continuing my own health education and optimization
What I Learned That Surprised Me
The certification opened doors I didn’t expect. I thought it would be either/or: become a health coach OR just use the knowledge personally. Instead, I created a third path that combines wellness education with my business expertise.
You don’t have to follow the traditional path. Many people get health coaching certifications and never coach clients traditionally. They become wellness content creators, corporate program designers, health tech consultants, or like me, business consultants for wellness professionals.
The credibility matters more than I anticipated. Having IIN certification creates instant trust and understanding with wellness professionals. They know I “get it” in ways someone without the education wouldn’t.
The knowledge absolutely applies to everything. Understanding nutrition, holistic health, and wellness principles informs how I make decisions about everything from grocery shopping to managing stress to planning my child’s meals to understanding my body’s signals.
Was Becoming A Health Coach Worth It?
Absolutely – but not for the reasons I initially thought.
I didn’t build a traditional health coaching practice. I didn’t create meal plans or run group programs or develop wellness retreats.
Instead, I used my certification as a foundation to build something uniquely suited to my skills: helping wellness professionals build sustainable businesses while maintaining my own health knowledge and family wellness practices.
The $6,695 investment in IIN gave me:
- Legitimate credentials in wellness
- Deep understanding of holistic health
- A community of like-minded professionals
- Options for career paths I hadn’t considered
- Knowledge I use daily for myself and my family
- The foundation for a business that combines my passions
If you’re considering health coach certification, don’t feel pressured to follow the traditional path of one-on-one client coaching. Your certification can open doors you haven’t even imagined yet.
The question isn’t “Will I become a health coach?” but rather “How will I use this knowledge and these credentials in ways that align with my unique skills and interests?”
For me, that answer combined wellness education with business operations expertise. For you, it might be something completely different – and that’s exactly the point.
Should You Get Certified?
Consider health coach certification if you:
- Want legitimate wellness education and credentials
- Are curious about holistic health approaches
- Want options for career evolution (even if unclear what that looks like)
- Make health decisions for yourself or your family and want deeper understanding
- Have existing professional skills you could combine with wellness knowledge
- Are willing to invest $6,695 without guarantees of specific outcomes
- Are comfortable creating your own path rather than following templates
Skip it if you:
- Need guaranteed income immediately
- Aren’t genuinely interested in health and wellness topics
- Want a clear, traditional career path with defined outcomes
- Aren’t willing to invest time and money in education that might take unexpected forms
