Healthy Brownies Made with Black Beans

Healthy brownies, say what!? Yup, you heard that right. Healthy brownies.

They’re guilt-free, so stinking easy to make, AND so good you’ll never go back to the unhealthy dust-in-a-box brownies again.

This healthy brownie recipe is a dessert you’ll want to make again and again!

Made with less than ten ingredients and whipped up in a blender, these are super simple and quick – about 30 minutes to make altogether. That includes baking ;).

Plus, incorporating black beans increases the nutritional value, so while best not to overindulge, you can enjoy them guilt-free.

Healthy Brownie Ingredients

What makes these brownies so delicious is the chocolate. And what makes these brownies healthy; black beans!

They’re the star ingredient that replaces flour in the recipe. Doing this means that they are gluten-free brownies. Plus, this recipe does not use milk so they are dairy-free as well.

In addition to black beans, healthy brownies are made with:

  • honey or maple syrup
  • coconut oil
  • coconut sugar
  • cocoa powder
  • vanilla extract
  • baking powder
  • eggs
  • chocolate chips
  • sea salt

Health Benefits of Black Beans

It’s no secret that most of us are lacking fiber in our diets. The idea that you can get fiber from a dessert is an awesome concept. So you can enjoy brownies and up your fiber intake because black beans pack so much of it.

A one-cup serving of cooked black beans offers 15 grams of fiber. Adults should aim to get 25 to 30 grams daily – which means black beans can offer 50 percent or more of your daily recommended total. 

And that high fiber content can actually help you lose weight. Fiber is filling, and it helps you feel fuller for longer. Eating black beans could curb your appetite, filling you up with plenty of fiber between meals. 

How to Make Healthy Brownies with Black Beans

Now that you know the secret to what makes these healthy, here’s how to make them.

These are dangerously easy to make!

Simply put the ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth. Then pour the mixture into a pan to bake.

One tip is to allow your ingredients to be at room temperature before blending. Rinse the black beans with warm water and melt the coconut oil. This ensures that your mixture blends well.

However, you also do not want to over-blend! This causes the batter to warm too much and becomes a soup! Your chocolate chips will melt too soon, and your brownies won’t rise as much when baking.

To store your healthy brownies with black beans, add them to an airtight container and consume them within 5-7 days. You can also freeze them for up to two months.

Are Brownies Made with Black Beans Actually Healthy?

Technically they are a treat but making them with nutritious ingredients does provide health benefits. They are also less processed than box brownies and much lower in calories.

Try this recipe once, and you’ll realize they taste just as good (my boyfriend says better!) than the at-home box brownies and take just as much time to make. So when considering practical ways for healthier living, this is a super simple swap to make!

Healthy Brownies Made with Black Beans

This healthy brownie recipe is made with black beans. It's easy to make and a delicious treat with nutritious ingredients perfect for you're craving a chocolate dessert.

Equipment

  • 1 8" x 8" Baking Pan
  • 1 Blender

Ingredients
  

  • 15 oz can of black beans drained and rinsed
  • 2 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup chocolate chips divided
  • 1/3 cup coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup coconut sugar
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup organic honey or maple syrup
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp sea salt

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease an 8" x 8" baking pan and set aside. Heat coconut oil to melt.
  • Add beans, coconut oil, coconut sugar, and honey into blender first. Blend until well combined.
  • Then add cocoa powder, baking powder, vanilla and sea salt into blender and blend until smooth.
  • Lastly, add eggs and blend until just combined.
  • Mix just 1/2 cup of choclate chips into batter.
  • Pour batter into baking pan evenly. Add remaining 1/4 cup of chocolate chips on top of the batter.
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes or until the top of the brownies has set and are slightly pulling away from the edge of the pan.
  • Let cool before cutting, then enjoy!
